The Yakan of Basilan island, just off the tip of Zamboanga, are believers of the Islamic faith, but still believe in some pre-Islamic practices.  They specialize in tapestry weaving with colorful thick yarn in geometric designs on square cloth to be used as a head cover called "seputangan" for women and "pis-yabit" for men. The "seputangan" can also be worn by women as a sash and the "pis-yabit" as a shoulder cloth by men. The patterns created by the Yakan are as  elaborate as the Tausugs, and the Yakan weavers are also highly skilled.

In 2017, the National Living Treasure Award was given to master weaver, Ambalan Ausalin.
